May Updates: Closing our School year, Disasters on the Farm, and Big Changes

2018 is not our year. I try to keep the negative talk to a minimum, but seriously, 2018 has been one long string of disasters. If I were superstitious I would be throwing salt over my shoulder, or whatever it is you’re supposed to do to break a string of bad luck, ha! From expensive car repairs x3, to my son’s freak accident (which broke his femur and landed him in the hospital for emergency surgery), to the crazy fire in our oven’s control panel (leaving us without a stove/oven until the new one is delivered in JULY), it has been one rough year! Our tractor is broken down, our…

Farm Updates: Spring Chicks and Ducklings

Spring means that all sorts of cuteness is being added to our little farm! We apparently have trouble with self control when it comes to cute little chicken babies, ha! Our local farm store had 7 unsexed Welsummer chicks. Brandon talked me into buying them because we don’t currently have any roosters and he wanted to roll the dice to hopefully get one. We adore our ISA Brown hens, but their downside is that they have a short lifespan. If we don’t want to go without eggs, we need to begin raising the next generation of layers for our farm. Anyway, he talked me into our cute little Wellies so…

MFW ECC: Saudi Arabia, India, and China!

March 2. How can it already be March 2? Right now, our life seems to be in fast forward. We have some big transitions coming up this summer, and a million things to do beforehand. I need for time to slow down so that we can get ahead of the wave, but instead, life continues to rocket forward so quickly I can barely catch my breath. Since I last updated, we have completed our homeschool time in Saudi Arabia, India, and China! The Saudi Arabia unit was a rough one for us, as the late winter blues hit badly. We were burned out, tired of winter, tired of every book in…

Introducing Pork Chop and Apple Sauce, our American Guinea Hogs

We have pigs! October has been a whirlwind. It seems like a million things have happened since I last updated, but our piglets are by far the most fun! We have been very slow to add animals to our little homestead. Brandon’s job here has been much more demanding and time consuming than we expected, which means that anything we take on here has to be primarily my responsibility. We’ve also found ourselves unsure as to how long we plan to be in Ohio, because of Brandon’s job. We have big decisions to make about our future. Even so, we felt ready for a new adventure! With the garden winding down and…

    Changing Seasons

For everything, there is a season. . .  We may still technically be in summer, but in our little corner of Ohio, fall seems to have arrived for good. The mornings have been crisp and cool, the cold air surprising me each day as I head outside to check on our chickens. The sun is a little slower to rise and warm the earth. The leaves are beginning to change colors, the pumpkins are ripening, and the sky has taken on that particularly clear blue that always signals the transition to fall. It’s my favorite time of year. Yet, I admit that I feel a sense of sadness about the…
