May Updates: Closing our School year, Disasters on the Farm, and Big Changes

    May 23, 2018 /

2018 is not our year. I try to keep the negative talk to a minimum, but seriously, 2018 has been one long string of disasters. If I were superstitious I would be throwing salt over my shoulder, or whatever it is you’re supposed to do to break a string of bad luck, ha! From expensive car repairs x3, to my son’s freak accident (which broke his femur and landed him in the hospital for emergency surgery), to the crazy fire in our oven’s control panel (leaving us without a stove/oven until the new one is delivered in JULY), it has been one rough year! Our tractor is broken down, our…

Wrapping up: Japan, Russia, Australia, and Antarctica with MFW ECC

    April 26, 2018 /

Today, I packed away my ECC teacher’s manual and textbooks. We aren’t quite on summer break yet, but we’ve completed everything we are going to complete of ECC and it was time to pack it away. Here’s a quick review of our last few units and some end of the year thoughts. JAPAN Japan was a fun unit for us! We enjoyed experimenting with origami (but we are all terrible at it). We loved our Japanese picture book, The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks. We ate seaweed for a snack, went out for a sushi dinner, and had a really enjoyable two weeks! The Vernal Equinox took place during our Japan…

MFW ECC: Saudi Arabia, India, and China!

    March 2, 2018 /

March 2. How can it already be March 2? Right now, our life seems to be in fast forward. We have some big transitions coming up this summer, and a million things to do beforehand. I need for time to slow down so that we can get ahead of the wave, but instead, life continues to rocket forward so quickly I can barely catch my breath. Since I last updated, we have completed our homeschool time in Saudi Arabia, India, and China! The Saudi Arabia unit was a rough one for us, as the late winter blues hit badly. We were burned out, tired of winter, tired of every book in…

    MFW ECC: Africa!

    January 25, 2018 /

I am more than a little behind on updating! When I last posted, we had finished our Germany unit and were beginning our Christmas break. We had a wonderful, relaxed break. We baked cookies, did Christmas art projects, watched Christmas movies, drank way too much cocoa, and just generally had a wonderful time as a family. Unfortunately, we then immediately came down with the flu! Cowboy, my oldest, woke up with fever the very day my cousins were driving up to spend NYE weekend with us. Brandon, the boys, and my cousin all ended up with the flu! We went to bed early on New Year’s Eve and began 2018…

MFW ECC: France! + Our lovely Thanksgiving break

    November 24, 2017 /

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you all had a beautiful holiday. We took two full weeks completely off of school for Thanksgiving break and it has been amazing. Normally I try to sneak in some assigned reading or other projects, but nope, not this time. We did go on one field trip to a science museum, but that was my son’s idea, so he takes full blame for making our break educational. 😉 I didn’t even do a Thanksgiving unit study! We totally relaxed, and it was awesome. Truth be told, I was even pushing for a Cracker Barrel Thanksgiving. Did I mention I wanted a complete break?? But Cowboy, my…

about me

Hi there! I’m Courtney. I’m a homeschool mom, book lover, gardener, and photographer. After more than a decade away, we moved back to Arkansas and are putting down roots (if we can manage to stay put, that is!). I mostly write about homeschooling these days, but sometimes share about adoption, special needs parenting, and our homesteading attempts. 🙂 Welcome! I’m glad you stopped by!
