Weeks 7 and 8: Celebrating Autumn and Rome!
I had to double check my notes to be sure we really just completed week 8! This semester is flying along at a crazy pace. Story of the World is really shining right now. Cowboy, like most little boys, is absolutely fascinated by Roman gladiators. Our current read aloud, Detectives in Togas, goes so well with SOTW and remains our favorite part of each day. I’m certain we would already have finished it if I wasn’t fighting allergies that limit my read aloud time. It’s such a great story! He finished Tales from the Odyssey Part 2 and began The Time Warp Trip: See You Later, Gladiator. Yes, it’s a…

HHA Week 6: Ancient America and a Mini Beast Hunt!
I’m doing even worse than normal on pictures today; all I have are a few blurry snapshots from my phone! Frankly, this matches my life right now, which feels like a blur in itself. We’ve crammed so much into this past week that I had to completely change my approach to school. For the past five weeks, I’ve plotted my lesson plans with detailed checklists for each day. That approach doesn’t work for everyone, but it works beautifully for us. . . when we’re home all day every day, when everyone is well, and when life in general cooperates. But life hasn’t been cooperating with my detailed checklists lately. 😉…

HHA Weeks 4 & 5: Greek History, Seeds, and the Harvest Moon!
These two weeks were our final weeks studying Greek history! Frankly, I’m a little sad! We’ve had so much fun studying ancient Greece, and we’ve barely began reading the wealth of Greek mythology available. We still have so many great books on our bookshelf that I’m tempted to stretch it out a little longer. I have to remind myself that the beauty of a chronological history cycle is that we will come back to this time period again down the road. It’s time to move on for now, but I think we will both carry a newfound love for all things Greek. We finished out our Greek studies with a…

HHA Week 3: Astronomy and Greek mythology!
With Farmer Boy in public school this year, I have people asking me daily why I don’t put Cowboy in public school as well. I admit, it’s tempting to think of having hours a day to be blissfully silent, alone, and free. 😉 But the truth is that there are three very good reasons why I continue to homeschool Cowboy, despite being in such a phenomenal school district. Homeschooling has proven to work better for him. He thrives with one-on-one, individualized education. Homeschooling has also had significant health benefits for him. We enjoy the time together. He’s not the kind of student to fight against school work, he absolutely loves…

HHA Week 2: Sparta, Athens, and Insects!
Tonight, as the kids drifted off to sleep in their beds, I sat in our little school room and prepped my lessons for the upcoming week. Every homeschool family will tell you that a homeschool room isn’t necessary at all for homeschooling. Learning can happen anywhere! But I must confess that I absolutely love having a homeschool room and hope to never live without one again. Week 2, our first full week back, was quite possibly the most fun week of homeschooling we have ever had. In Story of the World, we studied Sparta and Athens while we continued reading Greek mythology. It was so interesting to compare the warrior…
